'Cuse Student-Athletes Hold BALM March
4/16/2021 3:26:00 PM | Student-Athlete Engagement
By A.J. Walker, DISAB President
On Wednesday, April 21, from 12-4:30pm, Syracuse University student-athletes of all races and backgrounds will come together to amplify the cause Black Athletes Lives Matter (BALM). In the past year, our nation has had social unrest due to the killing of multiple Black people by the police and the continual inequality Black people experience in America in their everyday lives. Through a march, not a protest, student-athletes desire to expound the notion of Black Lives Matter to Black student-athletes. By attending the Black Athletes Lives Matter March, both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SACC) Equity Committee and Diversity and Inclusion Student-Athlete Board (DISAB) hope non-Black attendees will leave educated and Black student-athletes will leave empowered.
Â
For decades, Black students have attended universities as athletes to play the sport they love and/or to be able to pay their college tuition. Being a Black student-athlete comes with many challenges. These include all the basic challenges of a student-athlete (balancing school and sport), plus the racial systems and stereotypes that come with being Black in America. The complex lives of Black student-athletes will be further explored by student-athlete speakers representing the women's soccer, women's track, men's track, cheer, and football. In addition to the speakers, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" will be virtually performed by men's track alumnus Chevis Armstead. The march will also be a platform for students to express their solidarity and support with the Asian and Pacific Island community against hate.
Â
Student-athletes will be the primary participants in the march. They will walk in separate designated groups, times, and routes from South Campus to Coyne Stadium to ensure COVID safety. To watch the speakers live, go to Cuse.com and see the speakers live streamed. Student-athletes will wear One Orange shirts, which were created to fight against discrimination and demonstrate the unity we have as fans, student-athletes, and faculty.

ABOUT THE BLACK ATHLETES LIVES MATTER (BALM) MARCH
The Black Athletes Lives Matter March (BALM) was organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) Equity Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Student-Athlete Board (DISAB). SAAC's Equity Committee, which is led by Grace Asch (rowing, Sr.), is committed to empowering student-athletes to speak up against discrimination and foster discussions within SU Athletics and the ACC, leading to initiatives of diversity and inclusion. Partnering with SAAC's Equity Committee is DISAB, an organization focused on creating a place for student-athletes to raise concerns of diversity and inclusion within SU Athletics, Syracuse University, and the city of Syracuse and to create solutions for those concerns.
