
Orange Upset #11 Georgia Tech

 ATLANTA – Orange freshman Viktoriya Kanapatskaya defeated the 13th-ranked singles player in the nation to clinch Syracuse women's tennis' 4-3 victory against No. 11 Georgia Tech on Friday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. It marks the highest-ranked opponent the Orange have defeated since 2019. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia Tech (12-9, 5-5) took the doubles point with victories in match one and match three. In No. 1 doubles the Yellow Jackets' Gia Cohen plus Ava Hrastar defeated Polina Kozyreva and Sofya Treshcheva, 6-3 before Kanapatskaya and Natalie Novotna beat Mahak Jain and Rosie Garcia Gross on court 2. The doubles points came down to No. 3 doubles, where Victoria Flores and Carol Lee came from behind to defeat Guzal Yusupova and Miranda Ramirez in a tie breaker, 7-6 (4).

The singles matches were a back-and-forth affair, but the Orange (5-8, 4-6) ultimately secured their fourth point when No. 23 Kanapatskaya defeated No. 13 Victoria Flores, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in No. 1 singles. The three other Syracuse wins came on courts 2, 3 and 6. In No. 2 singles Yusupova took down Hraster in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Ramirez defeated Cohen, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3, and Kozyreva topped Garcia Gross, 7-6 (2), 6-3 at No. 6.

OF NOTE
The match was Syracuse's fifth straight against a ranked opponent. The win against the No. 11 Yellow Jackets marks the highest-ranked opponent the Orange have defeated since they posted a 4-2 victory against No. 9 Michigan at the 2019 ITA Kickoff Weekend.
