5/1/2021 6:45:00 PM | Softball
Syracuse lost both games in Saturday afternoon's softball double header against Virginia Tech. The Hokies won the first game, 11-1, in five innings and blanked 'Cuse 3-0 in the matinee. The Orange (19-19, 11-16 ACC) will wrap up the ACC series against the VT tomorrow, Sunday, May 2. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on ACCNX.

Virginia Tech (31-12 overall, 22-11) got on the board right away in game one, scoring four runs off one hit in the top of the first. A seven-hit, seven-run third inning extended VT's lead to 11-0.

The Orange broke up Keeley Rouchard's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth when Calista Almer started things off with a leadoff single. She moved to third on a single by Neli Casares-Maher and scored when Gabby Teran hit a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 11-1.

Kaia Oliver (7-9) was tabbed with the loss for Syracuse. Oliver started the game in the circle, but ran into trouble early which resulted in the Orange going to the bullpen early. 'Cuse turned to Jolie Gustave then Miranda Hearn. Gustave threw two innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while Hearn closed out the final 2.2 innings allowing two runs on two hits.

Alexa Romero threw a complete game in game two of the twinbill. She struck out five and walked one allowing three runs, on six hits in her seventh loss of the season.

Syracuse had a baserunner early when Angel Jasso made it all the way to second on a fielding error by Virginia Tech's left fielder. 'Cuse was unable to get Jasso home to score, as Rochard retired the next two batters on strikeouts.

Romero allowed just one hit through the first three innings but gave up two runs in the fourth which gave Virginia Tech a 2-0 lead. The Hokies added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo home run by Kelsey Bennett.

The Orange rallied in the bottom of the sixth with two outs when Jasso and Casares-Maher hit back-to-back infield singles, but Syracuse was unable to capitalize when Rochard got Teran to groundout to end the inning.

Geana Torres singled up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but again Rochard was able to strand a Syracuse runner to secure the 3-0 win.

Rochard threw her second complete game of the series, striking out eight batters. She gave up a walk and three hits en route to her 13th shutout this season.

The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday, May 2 at Noon. Inclement weather is expected. Check back to cuse.com and follow @CuseSB on social media for updates.
