Five Syracuse runners were tabbed to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams on Thursday, led by a trio of All-Americans.
The 2020-21 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the competition realm and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Annie Heffernan, Aidan Tooker and Amanda Vestri – who both qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships – as well as Silas Derfel, Dominic Hockenbury were represented between the two programs.
Vestri had an outstanding season for Syracuse, earning All-America accolades in outdoor track, an ACC Championship in indoor track and ACC runner-up honors in cross country. A health and exercise science major, she took 10th at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meters earlier this summer.
Heffernan was in the same race, taking 15th in the women's 10k at NCAA Championships. She was also an All-ACC honoree this spring after finishing sixth in the 10k at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She's majoring in global health.
Tooker was a Second Team All-American in the 3000-meter steeplechase. A communication and rhetorical studies major, Tooker is a three-time All-American in the event at Syracuse.
Derfel, a health and exercise science major, was an NCAA East Preliminary qualifier for the first time in his young collegiate career this spring. He also finished in the top-10 at the ACC indoor championships in the 5k.
Hockenbury also qualified for the NCAA East prelim this spring. He's majoring in bology and was Syracuse's No. 3 finisher in the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-August.
