Zaferes Goes for Gold on Monday
7/25/2021 2:13:00 PM | Cross Country, Track and Field
Katie Zaferes is set to compete for gold on Monday evening in the triathlon at the Tokyo Olympics.
The event will be streamed live on Peacock at 5:30 p.m. and will also be part of NBC's Primetime coverage beginning at 8 p.m. The full event replay is available beginning at 11:30 p.m. on NBCSN.
Zaferes is a two-time Olympian (also competing in the Rio games) and is the 2019 ITU World Champion. She is one-of-five triathletes on Team USA between the men's, women's and mixed relay teams.
Her and her teammates have been training for Monday's event in Setagya, Japan, a venue 30 minutes away from the Olympic Village.
"Between the venue, the High Performance Center and the Olympic Village, we've been able to get in all of our training really quite easily and in nice areas," Zaferes told USA Triathlon. "In the Olympic Village, the surprise was that we can go run outside and have a 3.6k loop each time, which is pretty solid for COVID times for training. You really don't feel stifled or like you have to just sit in your room."
In all, she's been enjoying her Olympic experience thus far.
"It's been really fun being here and really having the Olympic experience," Zaferes said. "In Rio, the triathlon events were so far toward the back of the Games that by the time our race was over, the Olympics were basically over. I felt like maybe I didn't take it in as well as I could have — so that was a big goal for me coming into Tokyo, and I can already tell you I'm really being successful at that. To be completely immersed among all the other athletes has been amazing. I've been collecting all the pins from other countries, which has been super fun for me, and I hope to collect some more and meet some more people."
At Syracuse, she was the Orange's first USTFCCCA Northeast Region performer of the Year, earning the honor in cross country in 2009. She won the 2009 NCAA Northeast Regional and leading the Orange to the team title, the first in program history, and the Orange women's second-ever trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She then went on to be an Honorable Mention All-American in the 3000-meter steeplechase for 'Cuse as well.
Zaferes is one-of-two Orange track alums competing in Tokyo, and one-of-six Orange alums representing their country at the Olympics in total. Justyn Knight (Canada/track), Jerami Grant (USA/basketball), Jenna Caira (Canada/softball), Kayla Alexander (Canada/basketball) and Hattie Taylor (Great Britain/rowing) are the others.
