Syracuse senior defensive end Kingsley Jonathan has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
The award, presented annually to college football's top community servant, is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented in February annually in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
Jonathan is one-of-93 players on the preseason watch list for the award. It's the second-straight year that he was on the watch list.
A CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American last season, Jonathan also received the 2020 Jim Tatum Award, presented annually to the top senior football student-athlete in the ACC. He was also a Campbell Trophy semifinalist last season, a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Board and just finished a two-year term as one of the ACC's three representatives with voting privileges under the Division I autonomy process.
Jonathan's community involvement includes participation in the 2019 Syracuse University OttoTHON Dance Marathon, which raised more than $200,000 for the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital. He's volunteered at the annual Boys & Girls Club Field Day at Manley Field House and he is the founder of Hoodie Drive, a program he started in 2019 to collect hooded sweatshirts for less fortunate members of the Central New York community during the winter.
On the field, he returns as a key player along an experienced Orange defensive line. He enters 2021 with 44 games played and 13 starts. He has tallied 81 tackles (50 solo), 16.0 tackles for loss, 13.0 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in his career.
Jonathan is a graduate of the iSchool at Syracuse with a degree in information technology management.
Season tickets for the 2021 campaign are now on sale. For less than $20 per game, fans can get access to every game of a home slate that features Clemson and Liberty – both of which finished in the top-20 of the 2020 AP Poll – matchups with longtime rivals Boston College and Pitt, an old-BIG EAST reunion against Rutgers, Wake Forest and an in-state showdown with UAlbany. This is the first time Syracuse has hosted seven home games since the 2017 season. Tickets can be purchased by visiting Cuse.com/Tickets or calling 888-DOME-TIX.
