The Syracuse women's soccer team will lead off a doubleheader at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 26, when it takes on Niagara at 4:30 p.m. Following that match, the Syracuse men's squad hosts Drexel.
SETTING THE STAGE
The Orange bring a 1-0 record into Thursday's pairing with Niagara. Syracuse defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in its season opener on Sunday, 2-0. Niagara lost its first match of the campaign, a 6-2 decision to Buffalo on Sunday.
THE SYRACUSE-NIAGARA SERIES
The series between the Orange and the Purple Eagles is tied at 1-1-1. The two clubs first met in 1996. The most recent encounter came in 2009, when the teams played to a 0-0 tie.
PROULXÂ HOPES TO DELIVER MORE ZEROS
Lysianne Proulx, a graduate student on the starting goalkeeper for the Orange, posted a shutout in her first outing this fall. She made six saves against Fairleigh Dickinson, including a point-blank stop that kept the Knights off the board.
Proulx has five career shutouts to her credit. She owns 191 career saves at Syracuse, good for sixth-place on the program's all-time list.
VUNIPOLAÂ GETS ORANGE OFFENSE STARTED
Senior midfielder Telly Vunipola ignited the Syracuse offense in the first game. She broke open a scoreless game by scoring on a second-half penalty kick. Vunipola contributed to the second goal as well, finding freshman Ashley Rauch with a lead pass that Rauch converted.
NEXT GAME
Syracuse hosts Eastern Michigan on Sunday, August 29, at 1 p.m. The match will be played at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium.
50 YEARS OF WOMEN'S ATHLETICS AT SYRACUSE
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons.
