Niagara Rallies From Early Root Goal

Syracuse senior Meghan Root scored first but visiting Niagara rallied with four unanswered goals before holding on for a 4-2 win on Thursday at the SU Soccer Stadium. Both squads evened their season records at 1-1.
ROOT STARTER
Root took a cross-the-goal pass from freshman Ashley Rauch to open the game's scoring just 5:11 into the contest. It marked the senior captain's first goal of the fall while Rauch's pass was the second assist of her rookie campaign.
VAILANCOURT LEADS PURPLE EAGLE CHARGE
Junior forward Florence Vailancourt took over the offensive end for the Purple Eagles and scored the next three goals in the contest. Her first two tallies came within three minutes of each other, at 22:01 and 26:52, while the third came later at 58:53. Niagara assists came from senior Anna Ibey, sophomore Emma Bough, and senior Ashley LoFranco, respectively.
NIAGARA PLEADS THE FOURTH
The Purple Eagles added to their 3-1 margin when junior Djeynaba Thiam converted a pass from senior Emma Davis at the 62:06 mark.
SYRACUSE BATTLES BACK
The Orange regrouped and put steady pressure on the Niagara defense the rest of the way. It paid off in the final two minutes when a corner kick by graduate student Natalie Weidenbach ended up in the back of the Purple Eagle goal.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons.
