
Kanapatskaya, Fonte Win Doubles Draw

NEW YORK -- Sophomores Viktoriya Kanapatskaya and Ines Fonte teamed to win their doubles draw at the Columbia Invitational in the Orange's first action of the fall season.
Kanapatskaya and Fonte cruised in three matches to take the Doubles B Bracket title. The duo posted back-to-back 6-3 victories to advance to the bracket final where they defeated the St. John's duo of Emilie Haakansson and Mouna Bouzgarrou, 6-2.
In singles action, Fonte advanced to the third-place match in the Bronx bracket, while Kanapatskaya narrowly fell in the consolation final of her bracket to Alina Mukhortova from Wisconsin, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. Freshmen Shiori Ito and Miyuka Kimoto made their debuts for the Orange. Ito took a win in a match against Columbia's Akanksha Bhan, 6-1, 4-6, 10-2. Kimoto picked up her first collegiate win, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-5, over Wisconsin's Charmaine Seah.Â
The Columbia Invitational featured competitors from twelve different schools, including host Columbia, Cornell, Maryland, Penn, Wisconsin, and Yale.
'Cuse returns to action the weekend of Oct. 1, when the Orange travel to Philadelphia for regionals competition.Â
