SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse volleyball team won back-to-back matches to begin the 2021 season, beating Quinnipiac and Yale both 3-0 on Friday at John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Orange move to 5-0 on the season, marking the best start since 2015, when Syracuse also began the season with five wins in a row.
"I was very pleased with the team's performance," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "Playing in front of a loud away crowd for the first time in almost two years was really nice. We fell behind early in the first set against Yale, but then we responded to take the lead and never looked back. Our hitting was very strong tonight. It was a nice win."
Syracuse 3, Quinnipiac 0
Senior Polina Shemanova lead the team with 15 kills and junior Marina Markova added 13. Junior Abby Casiano and sophomore Naomi Franco each tallied four total blocks and senior Elena Karakasi had 36 assists.
Syracuse won a closely fought first set, 25-20, and then won second and third sets 25-13 and 15-14, respectively.
Syracuse 3, Yale 0
Markova paced the Orange with 21 kills, two blocks and six digs in the win against Yale. After Syracuse trailed early in the first set, Casiano recorded a huge block to tie the game at five and give the Orange the momentum to take the match.
