Orange Lose to Seminoles

SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Syracuse (8-9, 2-4 ACC) had a potential game-winning shot fall off the rim with nine seconds left and Florida State (10-5, 4-2 ACC) closed out with a basket and two free throws to beat the Orange, 76-71, in the Dome.
Buddy Boeheim had 18 points, Cole Swider 17 points and seven rebounds and Jesse Edwards had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Orange.
Seminoles guard Caleb Mills had a game-high 19 points, which included a 5-of-6 performance on 3-point tries.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The contest came down to what was set up to be a final possession. The Orange, after forcing a Florida State shot-clock violation, called time out with 30 seconds on the clock, trailing, 72-71. Syracuse then played the ball into Edwards, who found Jimmy Boeheim in the post. Boeheim's effort fell off the rim with nine seconds remaining. Matthew Cleveland then scored on a breakaway dunk and after a Syracuse turnover and an Orange foul, RayQuan Evans sealed the outcome with two free throws.Â

AN ORANGE ADVANTAGE
Florida State was on the board first with a field goal from John Butler. Syracuse took the lead for the rest of the first half following a 3-point shot from Buddy Boeheim. An 11-2 run for the Orange widened the margin to nine points at 20-11. Cole Swider led the surge with six points, followed by Jesse Edwards with three and a basket from Buddy Boeheim.

A trifecta of free throws sunk by Joe Girard III gave the Orange the largest lead of the half at 28-18 with 5:17 remaining in the first period. A field goal from Buddy Boeheim broke up an eight-point Seminoles stretch that brought the visitors within two points of the Orange at 28-26. Mills sunk a 3-pointer to narrow the Syracuse lead to just one point and the teams entered the intermission with the hosts ahead, 37-36.

Florida State completed a 3-point play to snatch the advantage in the opening minutes of the second half. Jesse Edwards knotted the score at 47-47 with 15:33 left, only to have the Seminoles' RayQuan Evans and Wyatt Wilkes connect on 3-pointers.
The Orange fought, producing a 12-2 run during which Buddy Boeheim nailed a 3-pointer to give the edge back to Syracuse, 60-59, with 9:50 left. A layup from Symir Torrence put the Orange in front, 62-59, and after FSU answered, a dunk from Edwards had the Orange ahead, 64-61.
Mills tied it with a 3-pointer at 6:59, and he followed with another 3-pointer that gave the Seminoles a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
