FWAA names 'Cuse DB to its Freshman All-America Team
Darian Chestnut added another, and the most prestigious, award to his offseason haul on Monday, earning Football Writers of America Freshman All-America honors.
Duce, who was previously an All-ACC Third Team selection and earned Freshman All-America honors from ESPN, Pro Football Focus and 247 Sports, was also the runner-up in voting for ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year this season. He was also on the Shaun Alexander Award Watch List this season.
The FWAA Freshman All-America team has been awarded since 2001 and Chestnut is the eighth 'Cuse player to earn the honor. Chestnut's current teammates Stefon Thompson (2020) and Andre Szmyt (2018) were among those recently awarded it, with Andre Cisco (2018), Ross Krautman (2010), Max Suter (2007) and Steve Gregory (2002) as the others.
Chestnut started every game of his rookie season at corner and concluded the regular season with the second-most passes defended in the ACC (11) and led the Orange with three interceptions. He's just the third SU defensive back in the last 40 years to earn a week 1 starting job out of camp as a true freshman, joining Andre Cisco (2018) and Markus Paul (1985). Both also led their teams in interceptions as rookies and went on to be selected in the first four rounds of the NFL Draft.
With Chestnut returning for his sophomore campaign, and fellow All-ACC corner Garrett Williams having recently announced he'd be forgoing the NFL Draft this season and returning for his redshirt-junior season, the Orange enter 2022 with one of the league's top cornerback duos. In total, 'Cuse returns 17-of-22 starters from the end of last year for next season, headlined by All-American running back Sean Tucker.
Fans can now secure their season tickets for next year by placing a deposit.
