Orange Come up Short Against Panthers

PITTSBURGH, PA.- Despite another double-figure scoring performance from Buddy Boeheim, who had a game-high 25 points, Syracuse (9-11 overall, 3-6 ACC) came up short in a 64-53 loss at Pittsburgh (8-12, overall, 3-6 ACC).
Two Panthers produced double-doubles, including sophomore forward John Hugley, who scored 11 points and recorded a career-high 18 rebounds. Mouhamadou Gueye contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds for Pitt.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Pittsburgh defense clamped down on the Syracuse attack in the second half. After Buddy Boeheim scored and added a free throw to provide the Orange with a 40-37 lead, the Panthers held the Syracuse scoreless for 4:07. Pittsburgh owned a 47-42 advantage at that point and never trailed again.
ORANGE POSSESS EARLY EDGE
The Orange got off to an early lead after a 3-point basket from Cole Swider to begin the game. Buddy Boeheim sunk three 3-point shots and the Syracuse margin reached eight points with 10:33 to go on the clock. Both teams struggled offensively in the first stanza, the Orange shooting 10-31 (.323) from the field and the Panthers shooting just 7-32 (.219).
The largest Syracuse lead of the half came following a bucket from Buddy Boeheim, which made the score 21-11 with 6:16 remaining in the period. A 9-0 Panthers run brought the hosts within one point of the Orange at 21-20. The margin lived in single digits for the last four minutes, ending at 28-24 in Syracuse's favor to conclude the first half. Buddy Boeheim had 14 points in the opening period.

Following the intermission, Pittsburgh's defense tightened. The Panthers held Syracuse to 9-of-32 (.281) from the field, including 1-of-14 (.071) on 3-point tries, in the second half. Jamarius Burton paced Pittsburgh's offensive attack, with 17 of his 21 points coming in the final 20 minutes.
