Syracuse (12-3, 2-2 ACC) picked up a goal with 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter from Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, capitalizing on one of five corners for the Orange. Charlotte de Vries notched the assist, moving into 12th all-time at Syracuse with her 90th career point.
North Carolina (12-0, 4-0 ACC) had a hat trick from Ryleigh Heck. Erin Matson scored three points with a goal and an assist, becoming the all-time career points lead in the ACC. Sietske Brünning also added a goal and an assist.
How it Happened
- Brünning scored first, finding the back of the net on a penalty corner in the third minute. Ashley Sessa and Romea Riccardo had the assists.
- The Tar Heels scored twice more in the first quarter behind Kennedy Cliggett on a rebounded shot in the 11th minute before Heck's first of the day on a Brünning assist.
- The Orange had pressure early, taking five shots in the first quarter, including two on goal, but both chances were thwarted at the net.
- Heck scored the only goal of the second quarter on Matson's assist in the 22nd minute, taking a 4-0 lead into halftime. Shots were nearly even in the second quarter as the Orange took a pair while the Tar Heels managed a trio of chances. Each goalie made one save.
- Matson scored three minutes into the third quarter, finishing a feed from Heck, who had the final goal of the day for North Carolina in the 52nd minute.
- Syracuse scored with 32 seconds left in the game as van den Nieuwenhof converted on a penalty corner pass from de Vries, breaking the shutout. The Orange out-shot North Carolina 5-4 in the final 15 minutes of the game, making adjustments to get pressure back on the UNC defense.
- Syracuse took 12 shots across the 60 minutes, including five in the first stanza and another five in the fourth quarter.
- Brooke Borzymowski made eight saves in the game, turning aside four UNC shots in a first quarter that saw the Tar Heels take six penalty corners.
