One final weekend at home this regular season for the No. 12 Syracuse field hockey program as the Orange host No. 4 Louisville Friday under the lights at No. 19 Rutgers on Sunday for Senior Day.
From the Start
- The final two home games of the 2022 regular season are at hand as the Orange take on No. 4 Louisville Friday night under the lights and No. 19 Rutgers on Sunday for Senior Day.
- The Orange take on the Scarlet Knights Sunday afternoon for a TV game on ACC Network with Mike Corey and Rachel DeCecco on the call.
- It's  mix of old school and new school this weekend as the Orange take on a current league foe, Louisville (ACC) and a former conference opponent, Rutgers (BIG EAST).
- Syracuse looks to defend home turf as the Orange have played well at J.S. Coyne Stadium this season with a 7-0 mark and allowing just total goals. 'Cuse is currently working a 311 minute shutout streak at home, dating back to Sept. 16 against Duke.
In the National Rankings
- Syracuse was ranked 12 in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, picking up 594 points in the polls, just seven points shy of last week's total.
- Syracuse's opponent this week, Louisville, occupied the number four spot with 837 points North Carolina occupied the top spot with 1,049 points and 41 of the 42 available first-place votes. Maryland slotted second with 1,005 points and the remaining top nod. Northwestern was third with 935 points while Penn State rounded out the top five with 832 points.
- Nine 2022 opponents were ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll top 25, including the other six ACC programs: No. 1 North Carolina (L, 1-6), No. 4 Louisville (Oct. 21), No. 7 Virginia (L, 0-3), No. 10 Princeton (L, 0-3), No. 13 Wake Forest (Oct. 28), No. 17 James Madison (W, 2-1 OT), No. 19 Rutgers (Oct. 23), No. 21 Boston College (W, 3-0), No. 25 Duke (W, 5-1).
- All seven ACC member institutions were ranked inside the top 25, including three in the top 10 (UNC, Louisville, Virginia).
- As of this week, all three remaining opponents, (Louisville, Rutgers, Wake Forest) are all inside the top 20 nationally.
Comans Named to NFHCA Division I Senior Team
- Balancing graduate school and life as a Division I student-athlete, senior forward Quirine Comans has been named to the 2022 Victory Sports Tours/Division I NFHCA Senior Team.
- Comans is tied for the team lead with 31 points, racking 12 goals with seven assists. Her dozen tallies leads the team, as does her .375 shot percentage, scoring 12 times on 32 total shots, 26 of which have been on cage.
- The annual Senior Game is projected for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, November 19 at the Universityof Connecticut, ite of the 2022 NCAA Championship.Â
- Additional, SJ Quigley has been selected as an alternate for the Senior Team as well. One of the primary inserters for the Orange.
It's Not a Goodbye... It's a See You Later
- Sunday afternoon will be senior day for the Syracuse field hockey program.
- Prior to the noon start against Rutgers on ACC Network, the team will recognize 10 student-athletes: #4 Sam Swart, #7 Quirine Comans, #8 Laura Graziosi, #10 Charlotte de Vries, #15 Marie Sommer, #17 Joy Haarman, #22 SJ Quigley, #31 Pleun Lammers, #32 Sabine van den Eijnden, and #35 Clodagh Ferry.
- This class worked its way through some of the most tumultuous times in college athletics, navigating a global pandemic, all while coming together from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- With a bulk of the class matriculating in 2019, the Orange accumulated 46 wins in that time, alongside two berths in the NCAA Tournament, with a third impending. Last season, the Orange knocked off fourth-ranked Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by a 4-1 count.
Williamson's #9 Jersey Officially Retired
- Former Syracuse field hockey standout Julie Williamson's #9 jersey was retired on Oct. 9 prior to the 2 p.m. match at J.S. Coyne Stadium against Cornell.
- Williamson is the first field hockey student-athlete to have a jersey retired.
- During her career (1991-94), Williamson helped lead Syracuse to its first-ever NCAA Tournament (1993) after capturing the BIG EAST title.Â
- Her Orange teams gathered a 52-20-7 mark in that span.
- She was the first three-time NFHCA All-American, a four-time All-Region pick. She graduated as the all-time points leader and still ranks seventh.
- Williamson was the first-ever Orange player selected to play for the USWNT, scoring against France for her first international goal on July 21, 1993.
