Captain Lauren Bellefontaine scored a goal less than five minutes into the game and goaltender Arielle DeSmet recorded a shutout to give Syracuse a 1-0 win against RIT at Tennity Ice Pavilion. DeSmet, who recorded her seventh career shutout, turned away a shot on a breakaway midway through the third period by RIT forward Megan McCormick to preserve the clean slate.
Â
"Goalies like Arielle find ways to keep you in games," said head coach Britni Smith. "Giving up a breakaway shortly after a power play could be a big momentum swing for RIT. To have that big save at a time like that in the game, up 1-0, that's what good goalies can do. She definitely came up big for us there. It's nice that she got the shutout."
Â
DeSmet surpassed the 1,700 career saves plateau with 25 in the game. She has 1,704 in 68 career games.
Â
Bellefontaine scored the lone goal when she took the rebound off of sophomore Terryn Mozes' shot and put it in the back of the net. The goal puts Bellefontaine in sole possession of ninth place on the Syracuse career scoring record list. She has 87 points (32 goals, 55 assists) in 137 games.
Â
Syracuse will play the second game of the home-and-home series at RIT on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30 pm at the Gene Polisseni Center.
