Orange goaltender Arielle DeSmet had 43 saves, including the 1500th of her Syracuse career, in Syracuse's home opener against St. Lawrence. The graduate student from Charlotte, Vt., who had 24 saves in the second period, is one of five Syracuse goalies to achieve the 1,500 career-save milestone. Syracuse (1-3 overall) lost the first game of the home-and-home series, 2-0, and will play the second game at St. Lawrence (2-3) at 3 pm on Saturday, October 8th at Appleton Arena. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Â
"Arielle is a goalie who gives you a chance every night," said Syracuse head coach Britni Smith. "She kept us in the game. Obviously, we give her a big shoutout for her 1,500th career save. Overall it was a big night for her. She brings a calmness to our systems. It allows us to have a little bit of error within our systems and know we have someone behind us to back us up, that is very helpful."
Â
St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead at the 6:10 mark in the first period when Orange goalie Arielle DeSmet saved an SLU shot and the Sants Kiley Mastel put the rebound in the back of the net. The Saints scored their second goal on an empty net with 42 seconds left in the game.
Â
Junior defenseman Hannah Johnson recorded three blocked shots for the second time in three games, increasing her team-leading season total to seven.
Â
Graduate student Lauren Bellefontaine won 11 faceoffs. Her 39 wins in the circle this season ties for first on the team with junior Tatum White.
