A career-high 31-point outing delivered by senior guard Joseph Girard III led Syracuse (3-1) to a 74-71 overtime victory against Richmond (2-3) at the Empire Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y.Â

Three additional Orange performers finished the night in double-figures – freshman guard Judah Mintz (16), freshman forward Chris Bell (11) and senior center Jesse Edwards (10).Â

WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With the score knotted 68-68 in the extra session, Bell and Mintz tallied back-to-back buckets to put the Orange ahead by four. Girard converted two free throws with five ticks left to put Syracuse in front, 74-68. The Spiders closed things out with a last-second 3-pointer.

Syracuse broke open a 2-2 contest with a 12-0 run. Bell nailed his first three-pointer of the night, Girard added seven points with a 3-pointer and a pair of layups, and Mintz contributed a layup. With 15:05 left in the first frame, SU led 14-2.Â

The Spiders took off on a spurt of their own, using a 13-4 stretch to make it a 20-18 game with 8:47 left to go. Dj Bailey contributed five points, Jason Roche and Tyler Burton added three each, and Isaiah Bigelow locked in a pair to bring Richmond up to speed.

In a closely contested first-half, the matchup was tied three times. Syracuse entered the break with a slight 34-29 edge over Richmond. Â
HANGING IN THERE
The Orange gained a one-point advantage with just under two minutes to go in the contest, as Edwards dunked the ball off a lob from Bell. With 52 seconds left in regulation, Butler made one-of-two from the line to tie things at 63-63. Both teams had a possession before regulation ended.
After holding the lead for the entire first frame, it was traded 16 total times in the remainder of the matchup, with a pair of lead swaps occurring in overtime. Marking the most times a lead has been traded not only in a game this season but in the second half as well.

Syracuse will be back in action tomorrow night (Tuesday, Nov. 22), when it faces St. John's in the championship game at the Vividseats Empire Classic at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. and will air live on ESPN2.Â
