GENEVA, N.Y. – Five Syracuse University field hockey standouts earned All-Region recognition from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association as the NFHCA made its announcement Tuesday afternoon in a partnership with The LineUp.
Syracuse, which is the only ACC program to reach the second round NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons, had three student-athletes named Mideast Region First Team while two more Orange players were selected to the Mideast Region Second Team.
All three captains earned First Team honors: Charlotte de Vries, Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, and Quirine Comans. Jannemijn Deutman and Willemijn Boogert were selected to the Second Team.
Now a four-time NFHCA All-Region selection, de Vries was one of the top point-getters for the Orange this season, collecting 40 points thanks to a team-best 12 assists and 14 goals. A Second-Team All-ACC pick, de Vries led the Orange with seven game-winning goals, including the deciding strike in the 5-2 win over No. 7 Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. One of the program's all-timers, de Vries racked 99 points over the last four seasons, the sixth-most in program history for a career.
Collecting her second All-Region First Team honors, van den Nieuwenhof was a force for the Orange both on the backline and on the attacking penalty corner unit. Despite missing five games to injury, van den Nieuwenhof scored 25 points behind 10 goals and five assists, ranking third on the team in total points. She was a key part of an APC that converted corners nearly 20 percent of the time.
Fresh off an appearance in the NFHCA Senior Game, Comans was named for a second-straight season to the All-Region team. The First Team All-ACC selection led the Orange in points (44) and goals (17) while adding 10 assists to her ledger. Her 17 goals are the ninth-most for a single season in program history, one of which was an overtime game-winning goal against No. 18 James Madison.
A versatile midfielder, Boogert played in all 22 games as a sophomore, making 21 starts. She added 17 points with seven goals and three assists, capitalizing on rebound chances in front of the goal. Boogert finished with game-winners against Kent State and No. 19 Rutgers, while tagging Dartmouth for a season-best two assists. Boogert also served as an inserter for the attacking penalty corner unit.
Earning Second Team All-ACC honors as a freshman, Deutman played in 20 games across the backline and in the midfield. Deutman was key on the defensive penalty corner unit for Syracuse while also helping limit opponents to just over a goal and a half per game.
The NFHCA continues its postseason awards announcements with regional players of the year on November 30, All-America teams on December 13 and the National Player of the Year will be announced on December 15.
