Syracuse edged Division II Le Moyne, 73-70, in exhibition play inside the JMA Wireless Dome on Thursday night. The Orange, led by Head Coach Felisha Legette-Jack, made her Syracuse Coaching debut.
Â
The Orange were led by a game-high 19 points from senior guard Dyaisha Fair. Graduate forward Asia Strong (14), red-shirt junior guard Teisha Hyman (12), and graduate forward Dariauna Lewis (13), each topped 10 points.Â
Â
Le Moyne was led by red-shirt freshman guard Sydney Lusher, who had 17 points in the match-up.
Â
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With under five minutes to go in the third frame of play, Hyman came out of the media timeout and immediately scored a layup to put the Orange up, 45-43, over Le Moyne. That bucket put the Orange up with 4:27 left to play in the third quarter and they never looked back. Syracuse expanded their lead to 54-47 to end the frame.
Â
COACH LEGETTE-JACK SAID
"We have so much room to learn, the third quarter was really good," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "I like that we went after some things, and we put the points up but defensively we gave up way too many threes. I like our ability to listen and try. We will always make the free throws but getting to the line, we got to the line pretty good today and we'll make a lot more free throws than we did today. I think that it's going to be a fun season."
Â
HOT SHOOTING
In the first half of play, Strong led Syracuse with 13 points. Junior guard Alaina Rice tallied 10 rebounds off the glass. Strong also shot a 50% clip from the field while recording 5 rebounds and a single assist.Â
Â
In the second quarter of play, the Orange jump started an 18-6 run to take a six-point lead with 3:55 left in the half. They would go into the break with a narrow 35-34 edge.
Â
DOWN TO THE WIRE
Over the last three minutes of play, Le Moyne made a late push by going on a 6-3 run by scoring three free throws and a quick three-pointer off a fast break to pull within three points. Syracuse was able to secure the final possession and closed out the game to secure victory winning 73-70.
