Clutch Bucket By Mintz Earns ‘Cuse Win

A driving layup courtesy of Judah Mintz with just 13.3 seconds left on the clock propelled Syracuse to a 62-61 victory against Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon. The Orange (4-4, 1-0 ACC) gave the Fighting Irish (6-2, 0-1) their second loss of the season.
Jesse Edwards led the Orange with a double-double performance, his third of the season. The big man matched his previous career-high of 22 points and grabbed 14 boards in the victory. Joseph Girard III joined Edwards by pouring in 18 points.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The Orange secured its biggest lead of the day with a pair of layups from Mintz and Girard to make it 60-55 with just 2:28 left in the contest. Notre Dame's Cormac Ryan countered with a three-pointer to bring the Irish within two points and just 1:18 remained. Marcus Hammond was fouled and completed the three-point play, 61-60, with under 30 seconds left to play. After an SU timeout, Mintz sank a layup in traffic with 14 seconds left to secure the win.
SHAKE IT OFF
Syracuse pulled together a 7-0 run to make it a 30-27 game with 6:20 left in the opening frame. The three-point advantage was SU's largest of the first half. Edwards contributed four points composed of two makes at the line and a jumper, while Justin Taylor added a three-pointer in between.
Girard tied things up, 35-35, by nailing a clutch three-pointer with just 27 ticks left before the break. On ND's final possession, a missed 3-pointer by Cormac Ryan with three seconds left sent the game into the intermission. The tie at halftime marked the seventh within the opening frame.
VETERAN NEWCOMER COMBO
In a close second half, the Orange extended their lead to three points on four separate occasions. Edwards kept SU in front, 46-43, with 15:28 left to play by making a second-chance dunk. The big man came back again just a minute later, adding a layup to put the Orange in front again 48-45.
Mintz put Syracuse in front three times, and the third time was his shining moment of the game, as he sent Syracuse to victory. Three of Mintz's four field goals came in the second frame, he was 4-for-10 in today's matchup.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse will now return home to the JMA Wireless Dome for a six-game home stand, which starts off with Oakland on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. and the matchup will stream live on the ACC Network.
