
Orange Lose to Duke in ACC Quarterfinals

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Syracuse (16-17) battled top-seeded Duke (27-5) until the end before losing to the Blue Devils, 88-79, in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
Graduate student Jimmy Boeheim had a season-high 28 points and junior Joseph Girard III added 23Â for the Orange. Sophomore Mark Williams led Duke with 15 points and 16 rebounds.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
In a second half that featured five lead changes, the two teams exchanged big shots into the final minutes. Jimmy Boeheim's layup with 3:32 left gave Syracuse its final advantage, 79-78. Duke posted the final 10 points of the contest to earn a trip to the ACC Tournament semifinals.
EARLY DUKE DAMAGE
#7/7 Duke, the ACC regular-season champions, made an early statement by building a 24-13 advantage in the first 7:12 of play. Wendell Moore Jr. sandwiched two 3-pointers around two 3-pointers from Trevor Keels that provided the Blue Devils with an early, 12-6 lead. Moore Jr. added another 3-pointer and Jeremy Roach joined in with one of his own to help create the Duke 11-point advantage.
'CUSE COMEBACK
Syracuse retaliated with 10 straight points from Joseph Girard III. He started the run with a 3-pointer and a jumper and added on five free throws after getting fouled on consecutive 3-point tries.
After Duke edged ahead by five, 30-25, Syracuse finished the first 20 minutes with a 15-6 stretch. Jimmy Boeheim triggered the surge with consecutive 3-pointers and Girard capped it with a last-second 3-pointer that sent the Orange to the intermission with a 40-36 lead. Girard finished the first half with 18 points.
HOLDING ON
The Orange began the second half with 3-pointers from Cole Swider and Girard to up the margin to 45-38 at the 18:51 mark. A Jimmy Boeheim basket helped Syracuse equal its largest lead of the contest, seven points, at 52-45.
Duke managed to move in front by two, 57-55, but a Swider 3-pointer provided the Orange a 58-57 edge at the 12:48 mark.
Roach, who scored 16 points in the second half, connected on a trio of 3-pointers that helped Duke push ahead, 72-67. A Roach basket with 5:09 remaining had the Blue Devils in front, 76-71. An 8-2 Syracuse stretch, that featured 3-pointers from Jimmy Boeheim and Girard, gave the Orange their final lead.

Syracuse took the court without the ACC's leading scorer, senior Buddy Boeheim. The younger Boeheim was suspended for one game by the conference for a "flagrant act" in the Florida State matchup.
