Syracuse (16-16) squares off with top-seeded Duke (26-5) in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, March 10, in the Barclays Center. The contest, scheduled for a noon tipoff, will be televised on ESPN.
SETTING THE STAGE
Syracuse advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating Florida State on Wednesday, 96-57. Syracuse used a balanced offensive attack that featured four double-digit scorers and a defense that held the Seminoles to 2-of-25 (.080) of it its 3-point tries.
Duke won the ACC regular-season title with a 16-4 conference record to earn the top seed in the league's tournament.
THE SYRACUSE-DUKE SERIES
Duke has claimed the last six and eight of the last nine pairings with the Orange. The Blue Devils swept two outings during the regular season -- 79-59 in Durham and 97-72 in Syracuse.
A HALL OF FAME MATCHUP
The two winningest coaches in Division I college hoop history will guide their respective teams in Thursday's encounter. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, who ranks first all-time in coaching wins, and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, who is second on the list, are both members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
SYRACUSE'S SHOOTING PROPELS ORANGE
The Orange connected on 11 3-pointers and had four players post double-digit point totals in the win against the Seminoles. Senior forward Cole Swider led the way with 28 points. Junior guard Joseph Girard III had 16 points, senior guard Buddy Boeheim had 14 points and graduate forward Jimmy Boeheim contributed 12 points.
Swider and Girard each had four 3-pointers and Buddy Boeheim had three for the Orange.
DUKE'S HONORED LINEUP
The Blue Devils feature the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Mark Williams, and Paolo Banchero, the ACC Freshman of the Year. Banchero also earned First Team All-ACC recognition while Williams was a third-team selection. Wendell Moore Jr. was named Second Team All-ACC and A.J. Griffin received honorable mention All-ACC laurels.
