Syracuse Beats UNH In Opener, 2-1
8/18/2022 9:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Sophomore Erin Flurey and senior Florence Vaillancourt provided Syracuse with a two-goal advantage and the Orange held off New Hampshire, 2-1, at the SU Soccer Stadium.Â
It was the season opener for both squads. The Orange improved the program's all-time record in season starters to 15-8-4.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Flurey, who missed all of her freshman year with an injury sustained before she arrived at Syracuse, started the evening's scoring by driving to the net and tallying just 2:13 into the contest. The Orange maintained a steady attack on the Wildcats and by the intermission owned a 9-2 lead in shot attempts.
Vaillancourt benefited from a beautiful feed from graduate student Chelsea Dumond and put Syracuse ahead 2-0 at the 51:18 mark. The Orange did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
WILDCATS CLAW BACK
Trailing 2-0, the visitors rallied. Junior Alivia Kelly headed in a pass from junior Emily Bini, cutting the 'Cuse advantage to one with more than 25 minutes remaining. Syracuse's defense tightened around senior goalkeeper Michaela Walsh and the Orange held on.
Walsh finished with four saves for Syracuse.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse hosts Connecticut on Sunday, August 21, at 1:00 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free. The game will be available by live stream on the ACC Network Extra.
