Huskies Prevail At Syracuse
8/21/2022 4:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Visiting Connecticut (1-0-1) scored three goals in a five-minute stretch and went on to defeat Syracuse (1-1-0), 6-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
The Huskies finished with six different goal scorers in an impressive display of offensive efficiency.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The two long-time rivals were scoreless through the first 20 minutes of play. Syracuse goalkeeper Michaela Walsh, a senior, had kept the Huskies off the board with two saves, but was forced to leave the game because of an abdominal contusion. Connecticut quickly took advantage.
Jessica Mazo, Emma Zaccagnini and Jada Konte each tallied unassisted goals in a stretch that started at 20:28 and was finished at 25:17. The three-goal advantage proved too difficult for the Orange to overcome.
UCONN CONTINUES ITS CHARGE
The Huskies added to its margin when Chioma Okafor out-raced Syracuse goalkeeper Sierra Giorgio, a sophomore, for the ball, and promptly scored on the unoccupied net. Abbey Jones finished the first-half explosion with a header off a corner kick from Cara Elmendorf.
ORANGE SETTLE DOWN IN SECOND HALF
Freshman keeper Shea Vanderbosch started the second half for Syracuse and played well in her debut, accumulating fiv saves while yielding just a goal to Maddie Carroll with just over 20 minutes remaining.
NOTABLE NOTES
Syracuse hosts Lafayette on Thursday, August 25, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free. For those unable to attend, the game will be available on ACC Network Extra.
