
Orange Beat Saint Francis in Preseason Finale

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse wrapped up its preseason preparations with a 5-1 win over Northeast Conference opponent Saint Francis. The Orange scored all five goals in the final 21 minutes of the match and outshot the Red Flash 22-6.
Saint Francis defender Sean Smolyn opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a header off a free kick from midfielder Julian Jakopovic. The Orange remained scoreless until the 69th minute when sophomore forward Francesco Pagano won a penalty. Junior midfielder Jeorgio Kocevski converted the penalty kick and drew the score level, 1-1.
Six minutes after the equalizer, Pagano gave 'Cuse the lead with a strike assisted by forward Julius Rauch, 2-1. Midfielder Giona Leibold, forward Lorenzo Boselli, and midfielder Antonino Pagano all added onto the scoring tally in the last 10 minutes of the match.
Syracuse recorded 12 shots on goal compared to Saint Francis' four. Over the course of the three exhibition matches, the Orange outscored their opponents 12-3.
The regular season kicks off next week with two matches at the SU Soccer Stadium. The regular season begins on Thursday, Aug. 25Â with a match against Iona at 5 p.m. The Orange will then play the following Sunday, Aug. 28 against defending Big Ten champion Penn State at 6 p.m. with television coverage on ACC Network. Admission to both matches is free.
