Redshirt-senior offensive lineman Dakota Davis is a Campbell Trophy nominee.
The Campbell Trophy, nicknamed the academic Heisman, is awarded annually to the college football player that best combines academics, leadership and on-field performance.
In addition to being a key player on the Orange's offensive line, Davis is enrolled in the MBA program in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. A five-time member of the ACC Honor Roll, Davis has been named to Syracuse's Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of the last eight semesters.
In order to be selected as a Campbell Trophy nominee, a student-athlete must be a senior or graduate student with a 3.2 cumulative GPA or better. Nominees also must have outstanding football ability and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Davis has appeared in 39 collegiate games with 24 starts over the last four seasons. He appeared in the final 10 games of last season with nine starts after returning from an offseason injury in week 3. He and the rest of the offensive line paved the way for the fifth-highest rushing total in program history (2,562) and All-American running back Sean Tucker to break the program's single-season rushing record.
Selected by the NFF Awards Committee in October, the finalists and the winner are all honored at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas in December. Each finalist receives an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. During the event, one member of the class is selected as the recipient of the Campbell Trophy® as the best football scholar-athlete in the nation and has his postgraduate scholarship increased to a total of $25,000.
Davis and the Orange open up the season on Sept. 3 in the JMA Wireless Dome. Tickets for the Orange's much-anticipated home schedule are now on sale!
