For the first time since 2018, Syracuse football is 3-0, enduring five lead changes in the final 17 minutes of the game en route to a 32-29 win over Purdue.

Ice in his veins, Garrett Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden II for a 25-yard touchdown with seven seconds left in the game in just the second meeting between schools.

Shrader finished 13-of-29 across 181 yards and three touchdowns. He led the Orange rushing attack with 83 yards on 17 attempts at the JMA Wireless Dome. Gadsden II finished with 112 yard receiving, the first 'Cuse player with 100 yards since Sean Tucker last season against UAlbany.

The Orange defense had the only turnover of the game as Jatius Geer pressured Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell to throw the ball away, right into the waiting arms of Caleb Okechukwu, who went untouched 17 yards for the first 'Cuse pick six since 2019.

The Loud House lived up to its name as the Boilermakers had 13 penalties for 144 yards. After taking a 29-25 lead, Purdue kicked off from its own 10-yard line due to back-to-back penalties, which set the Orange up for last-minute heroics.

Purdue tried a hook-and-ladder on its final play of the day, but the Orange defense swallowed up the would-be chance to seal the win.

The Orange took the game's first lead midway through the first quarter on an Andre Szmyt field goal from 50 yards out, just four yards shy of a career-best.

Purdue had back-to-back scores for a 9-3 lead at halftime. Devin Mockobee scored on a 7-yard rush with 39 seconds left in the first quarter. At the midway point of the second quarter, Mitchell Fineran hit a 41-yard field goal, the final score of the first half.

Syracuse had the only touchdown of the third quarter as Shrader hit Isaiah Jones from three yards out to give the Orange a 10-9 lead with 2:11 to go, breaking a stalemate of 20 minutes of scoreless play.

Three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Purdue regained a 15-10 lead on an 11-yard connection from O'Connell to tight end Payne Durham.

The Orange scored twice in a nine-second span as Shrader and Gadsden II hooked up for the first time, proceeding the Okechukwu pick six for a 25-15 lead with 8:08 to go.

Purdue made it a one-score game, 25-22 Syracuse, on a 55-yard touchdown from O'Connell to Charlie Jones with 6:41 to play. Fineran missed a crucial 41-yard field goal with 2:53 left as the kick leaked right.

With 51 seconds left, Purdue took a four-point, 29-25 lead as O'Connell found Durham again in the end zone.

But the lead was short lived as the Orange, aided by penalties and ice-cold throws from Shrader, took the lead when it mattered most for the 32-29 win.

Syracuse had its first successful 2-point conversion since Sept. 30, 2017 at NC State. Gadsden II reeled in two receiving touchdowns, the first Orange player to do that since Trishton Jackson against Boston College in 2019.

Garrett Williams had two pass breakups, bringing his career total to 22, tied for ninth all-time at Syracuse with Phil Nash.

The Orange beat a team from the Big Ten Conference for the first time since 2013, a 21-17 win over Minnesota at the Texas Bowl.

Syracuse returns to the JMA Dome on Friday against ACC rival Virginia, its second of four-straight games in the JMA Wireless Dome. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN.
