Shrader has engineered four game-tying or game-winning drives in the final minute of his 12 starts at SU
The fourth quarter is becoming Garrett Shrader's time.
With less than 50 seconds left, he engineered a thrilling game-winning drive that culminated with a near-perfect pass into the arms of Oronde Gadsden II at the pylon with seven seconds remaining. The throw and catch lifted Syracuse to a 32-29 win over Purdue on Saturday to move the Orange to 3-0.
The start was the 12th of Shrader's Orange career – one full season of games for a team. The finish was his fourth game-winning or game-tying drive that he has led in the final minute of a game at Syracuse.
The Mississippi State transfer joined the 'Cuse program prior to the 2021 season and took over the starting job in week 4. Since then, Syracuse has had five game-tying or game-winning scoring drive opportunities in the final minute of regulation and on four of those the Orange have been successful. Only the 2021 Clemson game, which Syracuse still managed to drive 63 yards to setup a game-tying field goal chance that fell short with 38 seconds left, has the Orange's last offensive possession in a one-score game came up short of scoring with Shrader under center.
Â
In his first start against Liberty, the dramatics had much less to do with Shrader. That game against the Flames ended with a walk-off field goal by Andre Szmyt that was setup by Cody Roscoe causing a Malik Willis fumble that was recovered by Mikel Jones in plus territory. Shrader just ran 3:35 of clock, gaining the 17 necessary yards to make Szmyt's attempt a more makeable 35 yards.
However, the win set the stage for some of what was to come. In the Orange's very next home game two weeks later, Shrader – again with the help of some stellar play by teammates – scored with under a minute to go. This time, Syracuse tied the game against a top-20 ranked Wake Forest squad and forced overtime. Shrader engineered a 94-yard drive that took exactly two minutes, ending with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Sean Tucker with 21 seconds remaining. The Orange went on to lose in overtime to the Demon Deacons.
The most similar comeback to the Orange's 2022 version against Purdue came last season at Virginia Tech. The team went 70 yards in 1:04, capped by a 45-yard touchdown pass through a big hit over the top to Damien Alford.
Saturday's throw against Purdue had shades of the Virginia Tech win. Shrader was again drilled as he made the through and was able to drop it in the bucket for Gadsden over the shoulder.
With Shrader, the Orange are always worth the price of admission. Visit Cuse.com/Tickets to be part of the action on Friday night in the JMA Dome when Syracuse hosts Virginia.
