5 Things to Know: Syracuse vs. Virginia
9/21/2022 2:29:00 PM | Football
Syracuse hosts Virginia on Friday night in a primetime ACC showdown.
Here's five things to know about the matchup:
1. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Syracuse is in action at home on a Friday night for the third time in the last two years. The Orange have won six of their last nine Friday games and hold a 7-4 Friday record under head coach Dino Babers.
The streak includes 'Cuse's 27-24 win against No. 2 Clemson in 2017 and the 2018 Camping World Bowl victory against West Virginia. The Orange are 16-7 (.696) in weekday games since beating Kansas State in the 2010 Pinstripe Bowl.
2. A RARE VISIT
Virginia visits 'Cuse for the first time since 2005. The Cavaliers are the second-to-last ACC squad yet to visit the Dome as an ACC game.
Miami, which has multiple visits as a BIG EAST opponent, is now the last current ACC squad yet to visit for an ACC game.
3. SEEKING A 4-0 START
A win would give the Orange just the seventh 4-0 start since WWII and the first 4-0 start since 2018.
Prior to 2018, Syracuse's last 4-0 starts came in 1991, 1987, 1960 and 1959. Of those prior seasons, the 1960 squad that finished 7-2 is the only team that didn't win at least 10 games.
4. FAMILIAR FACES
Offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck have familiarity with this week's opponent, having each spent the last six seasons in the same roles at UVA, before joining the Syracuse staff this offseason.
They helped lead the No. 2 ranked passing attack in 2021 and one of just five offenses in the nation that posted over 500 yards per game last season. A number of that personnel returns to the Cavaliers this season including quarterback Brennan Armstrong, one of the top signal callers in the ACC.
5. THE LOUD HOUSE
Syracuse fans have made their presence felt in the first two home dates of the season, getting praise from national pundits and visiting media members and teams on the deafening noise in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Fans have another chance to make an impact on Friday night in front of a national television audience. Tickets are still available up through kickoff at Cuse.com/Tickets, 888-DOME-TIX or in person at the Dome Box Office on gameday.
