
Borzymowski Resets Career High, ‘Cuse Falls at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 11th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team lost by a 3-0 count on the road at No. 10 Virginia Friday afternoon. Orange goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski who made a dozen saves at Turf Field.
Syracuse (7-2, 1-1 ACC) was backed by Borzymowski's career-best 12 saves, while the defense weathered 14 corners. Eefke van den Nieuwenhof took four shots to lead the Orange, putting two chances on the mark.
Virginia (5-3, 1-1 ACC) had five different point getters, led by two goals from Cato Geusgens and another from Laura Janssen. Annie McDonough, Dani Mendez-Trendler, and Adele Iacobucci all had assists. Jet Trimborn made two saves for Virginia.
How it Happened

How it Happened
- Syracuse applied pressure early, earning two penalty corners in the first minute of the game, but the two ensuing shots did not make it on goal.
- Virginia had two corners in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter. The first shot was saved by Borzymowski before Mendez-Trendler inserted the play that led to Geusgens first with Annie McDonough on the stick stop.
- The Orange did not get a shot off through the next two quarters. Virginia took 13 in the second and third quarters combined.
- Borzymowski was up to the task in the next 30 minutes as she made eight saves in the second and third, including five in the second quarter. The host Cavaliers earned seven corners in the second quarter, all thwarted by the defense, including six-straight corners in a two-minute span.
- Virginia ended a long drought in the game with a goal in the 54th minute from Janssen on Iacobucci's assist.
- Geusgens' second came with less than three minutes to play on another Mendez-Trendler insert.
- Syracuse had a last-ditch effort in the final 90 seconds, picking up two more corners with four shots, but two were saved while two more were blocked.
- Syracuse out-shot Virginia 6-3 in the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers took 26 attempts on the day at Turf Field, including 10 in the first quarter.
- Borzymowski made 12 saves, a new career-best that eclipses her 11 saves last season against Rutgers.
- Virginia attempted 14 corners, including 12 in the first half. Syracuse held a 4-2 edge in the fourth quarter.
