Comans finished with seven points on her first career hat trick while adding an assist for a seven-point afternoon in the 2022 home opener. Lieke Leeggangers and Charlotte de Vries tallied three points apiece on a goal and an assist. All six goals and three assists came from Syracuse (4-0) starters.
Columbia (1-1) was the first team to find the back of the net against Syracuse this fall. Maya Walker and Lindsey Yu scored while MK Myklebust, Elizabeth Brissette, and Anabelle Brodeur earned assists. Katie Wimmer stopped nine Orange attempts in net for Columbia.
How it Happened
- The vaunted quick-strike offense for the Orange was on display again on Sunday as Syracuse hit the Lions for three goals in a three-minute span. De Vries led off the scoring in the 10th minute as she hit a back-handed shot off the far post and behind Wimmer.
- Just 30 seconds later, Leeggangers tipped in a cross-goal feed from Comans as the former knocked home her third goal of the year.
- Two minutes later it was Comans' turn to finish in a similar fashion as de Vries drove the baseline and jumped a back-handed pass in front of the cage for either Comans or Sabine van den Eijnden. It was the former who tipped it in for a 3-0 Syracuse lead after 15 minutes.
- Neither side found the net in the second quarter, despite eight attempts from the Orange, five of which were on net but thwarted by Wimmer.
- Columbia broke through, snapping a 221 minute scoreless streak for 'Cuse opponents this season. It was Yu who had the first goal allowed this season as Myklebust was credited with the assist.
- Syracuse responded in the 48th minute as Willemijn Boogert was in the right place at the right time, collecting a rebound off the left pad of Wimmers, snaking a tap in past the Lion netminder, putting the Orange up 5-1.
- On one of Columbia's three penalty corners, Brodeur inserted to Brissette at the top of the arc, who then snuck a pass behind one teammate for a waiting Walker. The Lions cut the lead down after Walker hit a long-distance drive past Syracuse reserve netminder Louise Pert.
- Comans and company responded quickly, striking 33 seconds later on a dish from Leeggangers to put Syracuse up by an insurmountable 6-2 score.
- The Orange controlled the pace of the game early while the defense held the Lions to just one shot in every quarter. Syracuse ripped off 25 shots, putting 15 efforts on goal.
- Wimmers stopped nine Orange shots for Columbia in the fifth meeting all-time between in-state foes. Starting keeper for Syracuse, Brooke Borzymowski, made two saves in her 46 minutes of work. Pert played the final 14 minutes of the contest.
- Comans is the second Syracuse player with a hat trick this season, joining Joy Haarman, who had a hat trick last weekend against Vermont.
- Syracuse has scored at least five goals in every game this season while putting up six twice, both in the second games of the weekend.
- The Orange improved to a perfect 16-0 in home openers under head coach Ange Bradley while the program also improved to 5-0 all-time against Columbia. Yu's goal was the first time a Lion has found the net in the series.
- Syracuse is now 113-21 all-time at J.S. Coyne Stadium under Bradley's guidance. It was the 10th time the Orange have played a game on September 4, improving to 7-3 all-time, including a 6-2 mark at home on this date.
- The Orange head for the Garden State for a pair next weekend.
- Syracuse leads off with Princeton on Friday at 4 p.m. The Tigers were ranked 13th in the NFHCA Coaches' Preseason Poll.
- On Sunday, Syracuse makes for the shore to take on Monmouth. Game time is set for noon.
- Syracuse makes its return to Coyne Stadium on Sept. 16 to opener ACC action against Duke.
