Orange Prepped for ITA Northeast Super Regionals

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team is set to travel upstate to West Point, N.Y. for the ITA Northeast Super Regionals from Oct. 20-23, hosted by Army. Five Orange will compete to bring home the title: Ines Fonte, Polina Kozyreva, Viktoriya Kanapatskaya, Miyuka Kimoto and Shiori Ito.

The format of the tournament will be single elimination, with one round of consolation matches for the singles event. In singles, Viktoriya Kanapatskaya will play as the second seed against Danielle Hack (Amherst). Polina Kozyreva is the fifth seed in the tournament and is set to play Anna Zhang (Columbia). Ines Fonte will face sixth seeded Neha Velaga (Princeton) and Miyuka Kimoto will play Leopoldine Boisseau (Long Island). All first-round singles matches will be played Friday morning, Oct. 20.

The Orange have two pairs represented in the doubles event. Shiori Ito/Kanapatskaya are the two seed coming in, set to face Christoforidou/Frasser Kawaratani (Temple). Kozyreva/Fonte earned the fourth seed ranking and will be playing Pinedo/Dzhambazov (New Jersey Inst. Of Tech). Both matches will take place on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The last weekend of action saw success for 'Cuse at the ITA Northeast Regionals, as Fonte and Kozyreva went undefeated, locking up three wins each in the singles event and three wins as a duo in the doubles competition to qualify for Super Regionals. Kanapatskaya and Kimoto won two matches each in the singles event, which allowed them to qualify for Super Regionals.Â

The Orange are not strangers to the Super Regionals, as they competed in the tournament last fall season. In doubles play, Kozyreva/Kimoto made it to the semifinals before falling to Amimeni/Tewolde (Columbia). In the singles event, Kanapatskaya and Ito moved on to the quarterfinals and Kimoto progressed to the semifinals.

After the ITA Northeast Super Regionals this weekend, the Orange will prepare for the ITA National Fall Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. from Nov. 1-3.
