It's Senior Day for No. 10 Syracuse University field hockey as the Orange get set to host Wake Forest in the 2023 regular season finale. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. After Friday's showdown it's all tournament time as the Orange have a quick turnaround for next week's ACC Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia.
From the Start
- One final game of the 2023 regular season is on tap Friday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium as Syracuse, which returned to the NFHCA Coaches Poll Top 10 this week, host ACC foe Wake Forest.
- Syracuse will look to finish strong entering the ACC Tournament, seeking its second-straight league win to level its conference record to 3-3, with three wins in the last four ACC games.
- Last weekend, the Orange picked up a dominating win at No. 8 Louisville, clipping the Cards' wings with a 4-1 outcome. Syracuse did not allow a Louisville shot until the 48th minute of the contest.
- The Orange are looking to bounce back against in the Wake Forest series after the Demon Deacons nipped the Orange in Winston-Salem last season. Syracuse has won four of the last five showdowns.
In the National Rankings
- After picking up a top-10 win on the road, Syracuse University field hockey vaulted back into the top 10 of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, grabbing the number 10 slot for week eight.
- Syracuse jumped three spots with 372 points after picking off then-No. 8 Louisville 4-1 last Friday in Kentucky. The Orange spent the previous two weeks ranked 13th and returned to the top 10 for the first time since the week four poll (Sept. 26).
- Northwestern grabbed the top spot again this week with 736 points, including 34 of the 38 first-place votes. Duke came in with 681 points for second this week with two top-selections. Rutgers was third with 648 points and one first-place vote as North Carolina grabbed the outstanding top nod with 644 points for fourth this week. Virginia, which hosts the ACC Tournament next week, was ranked fifth this week with 595 points.
- In addition to the four ACC teams inside the top 10 this week, Louisville was ranked 12th with 361 points while Boston College slotted 13th with 350 points.
- Nonconference opponents ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll this week include No. 9 Harvard, Â No. 15 Penn State (236) and No. 17 Cornell (165).
The 2023 "Senior" Class
- Following Friday's game, the Syracuse field hockey program will honor four members of its "senior" class.
- Lovingly called The Grandmas among the players, Charlotte de Vries, Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, Sienna Pegram, and Pieke van de Pas will play their final regular season game at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- The quartet have combined for 238 games played, 95 goals, 46 assists, and 236 points in their Orange careers.
- With any of these four players on the roster, Syracuse has never had a losing season; since 2019 the Orange sport a 49-32 record.
- With this corps, Syracuse is the only team in the ACC to reach the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in each of the last two seasons.
Double Trouble: Two ACC Players of the Week
- After a standout week, two Syracuse University field hockey student-athletes earned weekly honors from the ACC.
- Graduate student Pieke van de Pas was selected as an ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week while redshirt freshman Abby Neitch was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
- Van de Pas scored a pair of goals in a 4-1 win on the road at No. 8 Louisville, putting up the third and fourth Orange goals of the day just four minutes apart. Her first strike was a reverse chip rocket that went bar-down for a 3-0 'Cuse lead. Four minutes later, van de Pas swept a corner shot past the Cardinal netminder to cap the top-10 road win.
- Making just her second collegiate start, Neitch was a wall on the backline for the Orange. The redshirt freshman was credited with her first collegiate win, making four saves in the effort, all coming in the fourth quarter as her defense did not surrender a shot until the 48th minute. Neitch and her defensive penalty corner unit faced three Cardinal chances, again all in the fourth quarter.
- Virginia's Taryn Tkachuk was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week with van de Pas.
