Tournament Time has arrived as fifth-seeded Syracuse and the fourth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers are set for a rematch in Charlottesville on Tuesday afternoon. The Orange look to reached their fourth-straight ACC Tournament semifinals, going through the hosts to do so. Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush will have the call on ACC Network for the 1 p.m. showdown.
From the Start
- It's Tournament Time for the Syracuse field hockey team as the Orange get set for the 2023 ACC Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia.
- Fifth-seeded Syracuse draws the host Cavaliers, the Tournament's four seed, for a Tuesday matinee at 1 p.m.
- The Cavaliers nipped Syracuse in double overtime in mid-September in Syracuse during a top-10 clash at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- Tuesday will be just the second-ever meeting in the ACC Tournament between the two similarly colorwayed programs; Syracuse leads 1-0 in the ACC Tournament against Virginia with a 3-2 win in Charlottesville over the host Cavaliers.
- The Orange look to reach the ACC Tournament Semifinals for a fourth-straight season as the winner of Tuesday's tilt meets top-seeded North Carolina on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels are idle until Wednesday after earning the bye with top seed.
The One and Only
- The one and only time the Orange and Cavaliers met in the ACC Tournament was a doozy.
- Top-seeded Syracuse nipped third-seeded Virginia 3-2 in overtime on the Cavaliers home turf, needing a 77th minute goal from a familiar face to advance to the title game.
- Emma Russell, then a senior for the Orange and now an assistant coach, scored twice in Charlottesville, canning the game-winning goal 76 minutes and 23 seconds into the game.Â
- Virginia scored on its only two shots on goal of the game, tying the contest in the 59th minute of the then-70 minute games.
- Russell scored the second Syracuse goal of the day as well in the 38th minute, putting the Orange up 2-0 thanks to Alma Fenne's goal in the 10th minute.
- Virginia struck twice in the second half with goals in the 47th and 59th minute to push things to overtime.
Nearing the Charts
- She's a center back that can do it all.
- Eefke van den Nieuwenhof is having a solid season scoring the ball, leading the Orange with 13 goals and four assists for a team-best 30 points.
- She is five points shy of reaching the charts for single-season points, with five players tied for 18th with 35 single-season points.
- Her 13 goals this year are also just shy of the record books; one more would deadlock her with five players for the 18th-most goals in a single season.
- Van den Nieuwenhof led Syracuse's goal scoring efforts in 2021 as well with 11 tallies.
