Orange Women Claim NCAA Regional Title
11/10/2023 2:48:00 PM | Cross Country
The Syracuse women's cross country team won the NCAA Northeast Regional, the first regional title for the Orange women since 2011.
Led by a sixth-place finish by Savannah Roark (19:59.1), Syracuse placed four runners in the top-22 to earn USTFCCCA All-Region designation. Roark was followed by Rylie Lusk in 16th (20:16.0), Madison Neuner in 19th (20:33.4) and Sophia Jacobs-Townsley in 22nd (20:27.2) to medal. Olivia Joly rounded out the 'Cuse scoring with a 35th place finish in 20:40.0. Emma Eastman (39th/20:47.8) and Baneet Bains (21:13.4/73rd) also raced.
No. 28 Syracuse's 98 points bested Boston College (109), No. 29 Providence (137) and No. 26 Harvard (140) for the team title and subsequently earned an automatic bid to next week's NCAA Championship.
The 'Cuse men finished third at the meet, missing one of the two automatic qualifying spots. However, the team's resume bodes well to extend the nation's fourth-longest active streak of qualifying for the NCAA Championships with an at-large bid.
Perry Mackinnon was the first Orange finisher across the line at Van Cortlandt Park, taking fourth in 29:43.4. He was joined by Sam Lawler (12th/29:57.9), Alex Comerford (17th/30:06.3) and Silas Derfel (23rd/30:11.9) in earning all-region accolades. Nathan Lawler (30:28.6) was the team's fifth scorer in 40th, while Matthew Scrape (31:54.8) was the sixth and final finisher for SU.
The NCAA will announce its at-large selections via the selection show on Saturday at 5 p.m. The NCAA Championships will be on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Virginia.
