With a flair for the dramatic, the No. 11 Syracuse University field hockey team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals after picking off No. 7 Liberty Friday evening, extinguishing the Flames 2-1 in overtime. Charlotte de Vries tipped in the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute, setting up a rematch Sunday afternoon against No. 3 Duke. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Williams FIeld at Jack Katz Stadium, live on ESPN+. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament Championship Weekend in Chapel Hill next week.
From the Start
- Another season, another NCAA Tournament Elite 8 appearance for the Syracuse Orange.
- Team 51 extends the longest NCAA Quarterfinals appearance streak in the conference with its third-straight berth in the next round, thanks to late heroics from Lieke Leeggangers and Charlotte de Vries, who scored in the 58th and 63rd minutes, respectively, to knock off No. 7 Liberty on Friday.
- Syracuse head coach Lynn Farquhar won her first NCAA Tournament game at the helm of the program, beating the team that she last faced in the postseason while helming the Saint Joseph's program.
- The 2-1 overtime win propelled No. 11 Syracuse to a rematch against third-seeded Duke on Sunday afternoon as the Orange look to exact revenge from a setback at the same venue back in September.
- It's a surface the current Orange are familiar with, having played at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium four times in the last two seasons as Duke hosted the 2022 ACC Tournament. Sunday will be the fifth game in the last two years at WFAJKS, a venue Syracuse is 2-2 in during that stretch.
Noted Field Hockey Conference, The ACC
- There was little doubt left after Friday that the ACC is THE force in college field hockey as the league went a clean 5-0 during the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
- The only other conferences with representatives in the NCAA Quarterfinals are the B1G (Northwestern, Maryland), and the Ivy League (Harvard).
- Regardless of Sunday's result, the ACC is guaranteed to have at least one team at Championship Weekend next week at Karen Shelton Stadium, with the chance of securing every spot in the Final Four.
- The ACC out-scored its opponents 14-5 in the opening round as all five league teams did not allow more than one goal in the first round. The B1G out-scored teams 8-4 while going 2-2 in the first round.
We Meet Again, Duke.
- Syracuse and Duke meet once again, this time as NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal foes.
- The Blue Devils beat Syracuse 4-0 at this same venue back in September, but the Orange have the experience of a 12-3 all-time record against Duke to call upon.
- 'Cuse and Duke meet for a second time in a season for the first time since the fall 2021 campaign. Syracuse went 2-0 against the Blue Devils that season, out-scoring Duke 12-3 along the way.
- Syracuse is 2-1 when clashing with the Blue Devils for a second time, including wins in the last two rematch meetings.
ACC Field Hockey Postseason Awards
- Syracuse had three names on the list of ACC Field Hockey Postseason Award Winners: Charlotte de Vries, Pieke van de Pas, and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof.
- Van den Nieuwenhof was selected as the league's Defensive Player of the Year. She is the second 'Cuse player to earn that honor, joining Alyssa Manley (2015).
- Van den Nieuwenhof, de Vries, and van de Pas were all selected to the All-ACC First Team as well.
- De Vries is the first player in program history to be named All-ACC five times in her career, while van den Nieuwenhof becomes the fourth player to be a four-time All-ACC selection.Â
- De Vries is a three-time All-ACC First Team pick (2019, 2020, 2023), while van den Nieuwenhof has been a First Team twice (2020, 2023).
- Since joining the ACC for the 2013 season, Syracuse has had 46 All-ACC Selections while the all-time All-Conference selections stands at 121 since the BIG EAST added an all-conference team in 1993.
