Sophomore guard Judah Mintz scored 19 of his career-high 26 points in the second half and Syracuse (2-0) defeated Canisius (0-1), 89-77, on Wednesday night inside the JMA Wireless Dome.

Mintz led the Orange in scoring for the second straight outing. Sophomore guard JJ Starling added 17 points, giving Syracuse's starting backcourt 43 combined points.

WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
A 12-0 Syracuse run at the 12:29 minute mark in the second half was sparked by 10 points from Mintz. He ignited the stretch with a 3-pointer he was fouled on. He added the free throw for a four-point play. Mintz followed with back-to-back conventional three-point plays. Starling capped the run with a layup and the Orange led, 66-48.

A FIRST-HALF TUG OF WAR
The two New York rivals traded baskets in the early going. Syracuse managed a 14-7 lead but the Golden Griffins retaliated with five unanswered points to get within two. With 8:15 left in the opening period, a dunk from Frank Mitchell pulled Canisius close again, 22-19. This time the Orange answered with a 10-3 run, fueled by 3-pointers from Mintz and sophomore forward Justin Taylor. Syracuse had a 41-32 margin heading into halftime.
THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS STAY WITHIN REACH
Canisius used the long ball to stay in the game after the intermission. The Golden Griffins made eight of their 10 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes. Canisius shaved the nine-point halftime margin to five, 45-40, on a basket from Siem Uijtendaal. A 3-pointer by Tahj Staveskie at 12:57 cut the Orange edge back to six, before Syracuse's decisive 12-0 run.Â
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse will be back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 14, when the squad faces rival Colgate inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
