Cavaliers Threes Help Defeat Orange

Host Virginia (7-1, 1-0) hit seven-of-eight 3-point attempts to start the second half and went on to defeat Syracuse (5-3, 0-1) in the ACC opener for both schools in Charlottesville, Va.
Sophomore guard J.J. Starling led the Orange with 16 points, 13 of which came after halftime. Sophomore forward Maliq Brown also scored in double-digits with 10 points, and added five rebounds.

WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With the teams even at 17-17 with 7:01 to go in the first half, the Cavaliers went on a 9-1 scoring run to take an eight-point advantage at 26-18. Virginia stretched its lead to 15 points, thanks to seven unanswered points, and entered the break ahead, 37-24. The Cavaliers did not trail the rest of the game.

SYRACUSE JUMPS IN FRONT
The Orange started strong, tallying the first five points of the contest. Mintz lobbed to junior center Naheem McLeod for a dunk and sophomore forward Chris Bell drained a 3-pointer in the opening two minutes. A see-saw battle ensued with nine lead changes in the first 11:38 of action.
Virginia's Isaac McKneely asserted himself at the offensive end and finished the opening period with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.The Cavaliers entered the break with a 37-24 lead.

CAVALIERS CONTINUE TO PRESSURE
Virginia continued to increase its advantage throughout the second half. At the 15:09 mark, the 'Hoos strung together a 13-point run with two 3-pointers from McKneely, one 3-point jumper from Andrew Rohde, and one field goal each from Ryan Dunn and Lii Bond, to push the score to 62-35.Â

The Orange pieced together a 10-point run after a layup from Brown, conventional three-point plays from sophomore guards Quadir Copeland and Starling, and a mid-range jumper from Bell, making the score 75-52. Virginia was able to maintain a comfortable margin the rest of the way.Â

Syracuse will return to the JMA Wireless Dome on December 5 for a contest against New York foe Cornell. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on ACC Network.
