First Career Weekly Honors for Freshman
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After a breakout weekend, Syracuse University men's lacrosse freshman Joey Spallina has earned multiple weekly honors.
Spallina was selected as the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and was selected to the USILA Division I Team of the Week. Both organizations released weekly awards on Tuesday.
Spallina picked up 12 points over the weekend, scoring five goals in each win over UAlbany (20-7) and Holy Cross (15-6). The Mount Sinai, New Yorker added two assists on Sunday against Holy Cross for a seven-point day.
In addition to impressive goal and point totals, the attackman was highly efficient on offense, converting 10 of his 14 total shots into goals, a 71.4 shooting percentage for the weekend.
The rookie scored three goals on the man-up as well, aiding in the Orange going 8-for-9 on the power play over the weekend, a near 90-percent conversion rate.
Spallina is the second Syracuse player to earn weekly honors from the ACC, joining goalie Will Mark, who was last week's Defensive Player of the Week. Virginia's Grayson Sallade was tabbed as this week's ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
The No. 16 Orange head to College Park, Maryland for a clash with the defending national champion, No. 4 University of Maryland. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Big Ten Network Plus. Tim Leonard '20 and Kyle Fetterly '09 will have the call on TK99/105 while WAER will also carry the game.
Syracuse makes its first trip to College Park to face the Terps since the 1997 season, and the Orange meet Maryland in the DMV for the first time in the regular season since 1983.
