Syracuse University's men's lacrosse team is heading on the road for the first time of the 2023 season. The No. 16 Orange will face the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins in College Park, Maryland on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on BTN+
Syracuse's Hot Start
For the first time since 2020, 'Cuse has begun the season 3-0. The Orange opened the season undefeated after a weekend of wins against UAlbany and Holy Cross. The Terrapins are currently sitting at 1-1 after a loss to Loyola University Maryland on Sunday. It was the first time Maryland has lost a regular season game since 2020.
History vs. Maryland
The Orange and the Terrapins have only faced off 10 times since 1983. Since then, the series sits tied at 5-5. When Syracuse and Maryland faced off in 2022, the then No. 1 Terrapins came out on top with a final score of 14-10. The last time Syracuse defeated Maryland was during the 2009 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal when 'Cuse won 11-6 in Hempstead, New York.
Ties To The Terrapins
Head Coach Gary Gait is no stranger to College Park. Gait served as the assistant coach of Maryland's women's lacrosse program from 1995-2001. During his tenure, he helped lead the Terrapins to seven NCAA Championship titles. Gait was named head coach of Syracuse women's lacrosse in 2007 after his stint in Maryland. Since becoming head coach of the men's lacrosse program in 2022, Gait's record against Maryland sits at 0-1.
Spallina Shines
After Syracuse's first three games of the 2023 season, attackman Joey Spallina leads the team in both goals and points. The freshman helped lead the Orange to an undefeated start by scoring five goals in back-to-back games against UAlbany and Holy Cross. He notched an additional two points by serving up two assists against Holy Cross.
Rising In The Rankings
The Orange are ranked 16th in the USILA Coaches Poll and 18th in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. It has been a while since 'Cuse has seen action in the polls, having been unranked since March 2022. Syracuse started at No. 13 at the beginning of the 2022 season.
