Girard’s 26 Points Bests FSU, 76-67

Senior guard Joseph Girard III (26 points) led all scorers and collected 20-plus points for the ninth time this season in Syracuse's (15-10, 8-6), 76-67, routing of Florida State (8-17, 6-8) on Wednesday evening.
Senior center Jesse Edwards (18 points) amassed his 10th double-double of the season with a team-best 12 rebounds while shooting 6-of-6 at the foul line. Freshman guard Judah Mintz (16) dished out a squad-high six assists and freshman forward Chris Bell (10) contributed a career-high six boards before fouling out.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
A 16-2 scoring run down the stretch secured the game for the Orange. Within the game-solidifying run, Mintz completed a pair of three-point plays at the line and totaled 10 points within the spurt. Syracuse held a 65-56 advantage and expanded its lead as high as 12 across the final seven minutes of action.
TIGHT GAME IN TUCKER
The Orange got to the net quickly, four seconds after Edwards captured the opening tip and Mailq Brown dunked the ball on a fast break. Edwards added a jumper and Girard connected his first 3-pointer of the night to build SU's first stretch of the night. Matthew Cleveland then put FSU's first two points on the board with a dunk before Bell rounded out SU's run. Three minutes in Syracuse held a 9-2 advantage.
Midway through the opening frame, the Seminoles conjured up 13 answered points. Naheem McLeod led FSU with six points from three dunks and Matthew Cleveland added a 3-pointer. Cleveland then rounded out the stretch with a dunk and Florida State held a 27-19 lead with four minutes before the break.
Two minutes out from halftime, Girard single-handedly brought Syracuse within two of the Noles, 29-27, with a pair of 3-pointers and a layup. McLeod sandwiched his fifth dunk of the night for Florida State within Girard's makes. Girard's late run accounted for eight of the Orange's last 10 points in the first half of action.
FSU entered the intermission with a six-point lead against SU, 35-29.
STREAKING IN THE SECOND
Syracuse amassed a 10-2 scoring stretch, which gave the Orange their first lead of the second frame, 45-44. Edwards dunked the ball to start things off, Chris Bell contributed five points, and Girard closed things off with a 3-pointer with 15 minutes to go.
With 11 minutes left in the contest, Mintz was fouled by Caleb Mills and the freshman guard completed the three-point play. Bell followed with a key 3-pointer from the corner, and the Orange held a one-point advantage yet again, 55-54. Mintz went on to complete an additional three-point play after being fouled on a jumper and added four points from the field. Mintz's late makes accounted for 10 points of a comanding 16-2 Orange run. After a Girard free-throw rounded out the comeback, Syracuse led 65-61.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
The Orange return to the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday, Feb. 14 for a clash with NC State. Tip-off against the Wolfpack is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the pairing will air live on the ACC Network.
