SOUTH BEND, IN. – A strong fourth inning pushed Syracuse softball to its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season, as the Orange beat Notre Dame, 5-3, in game one of a doubleheader. After eight scoreless innings, game two was called a tie due to persistent weather at Melissa Cook Stadium.Â
Freshman infielders Trinity Nichols and Lauren Vaughn logged their first career RBIs in the 5-3 win. Junior left-handed pitcher Lindsey Hendrix orchestrated a strong outing in the game two tie, throwing her first complete game shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
Syracuse (10-15-1, 1-7-1 ACC) took the lead in the third inning. Sophomore infielder Tessa Galipeau worked a 2-1 count, and then turned on a ball on the inside part of the strike zone. The ball landed past the right field wall, her first home run of the season, 1-0.
The Orange offense kept rolling in the fourth frame. Outfielder Madelyn Lopez and infielder Kelly Breen started the inning strong, logging back-to-back singles. In her second at-bat, outfielder Angel Jasso doubled the Syracuse lead with her second hit of the game, 2-0. With two runners on, Vaughn snuck a ball past the third base line, clearing the bases and extending the Orange advantage, 4-0. Nichols capped the scoring display with an RBI-double, 5-0.
In its half of the fourth, Notre Dame (18-8-1, 4-4-1) responded. After outfielder Leea Hanks reached on a walk, infielder Lexi Orozco recorded the Fighting Irish's first hit of the game with a two-run homer, 5-2.Â
After Notre Dame struck back in the fourth frame, Knight allowed just one run over the last three innings, tossing her second complete game of the season. Nichols and Vaughn recorded the first RBIs of their career. The Orange tallied five runs over 11 hits, both highs in ACC play this season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:Â
Both starting pitchers were excellent in the series finale, limiting scoring opportunities across all eight innings. Hendrix found a groove against the Fighting Irish, throwing seven scoreless innings while striking out four batters. In her second start of the series, Payton Tidd logged three strikeouts.
Due to a lengthy weather delay, the second game of the doubleheader was called a tie after eight innings. Both teams logged five hits and one error. It is the second tie in program history and the first since 2000 when the Orange tied with Rutgers on April 16, 3-3.Â
UP NEXT:
The Orange welcome Louisville on Friday, Mar. 31 at 3 p.m., opening the 2023 home schedule. Admission to Skytop Softball Stadium is free and the series will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
