
Syracuse Loses Two Against Louisville

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse softball opened its 2023 home schedule with two loses against Louisville in a doubleheader. In the game one 5-3 loss, the Cardinals held off a late Syracuse rally.
In game two, a six-RBI performance from designated player Taylor Roby led Louisville past Syracuse in an 8-0 run-rule game.Â
Across both games, Syracuse tallied three runs and seven hits.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
After a scoreless first inning, Louisville scored in back-to-back frames, driving in runs in the second and third innings. Roby laced a double to the gap, followed by a walk from designated player Makayla Hurts. A fielder's choice scored the first run.Â
In the third, outfielder Korbe Otis logged a single, advancing to second on a passed ball. Catcher Sarah Gordon doubled the advantage with a RBI single, 2-0.Â
The Cardinals added two more scores in the top of the fifth. Roby found more success at the plate, hitting a one-out solo home run to deep left center, 3-0. A Hurst single set the table for an RBI-single for infielder Easton Lotus, 4-0.Â
Syracuse rallied in its half of the fifth inning. Consecutive singles from infielders Tessa Galipeau and Trinity Nichols started the inning. A sacrifice bunt from catcher Laila Alves moved the runners to second and third for Rebecca Clyde. The junior infielder knocked a ball up the middle that got by the center fielder, allowing both runners and Clyde to score, 4-3.Â
Louisville added an insurance run in the seventh, as Hess scored on a fielding error, 5-3.Â
The Orange ended the game with three runs on six. Hendrix threw her second consecutive complete game, striking out three batters. Galipeau logged her second mult-hit performance of the season, going two-for-three with two singles. Madelyn Lopez hit the first triple of her career and the first for the Orange in 2023.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
Louisville struck first, taking the early lead in the first with a two-run home run from Roby, 2-0.Â
After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals extended their lead, as Gordon recorded a two-run home run, 4-0.Â
Roby ended the game with her third home run across both games, hitting a grand slam to center field, 8-0.
Madison Knight started the second game, throwing 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and seven walks. Louisville starter Alyssa Zabala logged five innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Galipeau recorded a hit, giving her three across both games of the doubleheader.Â
