BALTIMORE - Three Syracuse University men's lacrosse standouts, Will Mark, Saam Olexo, and Joey Spallina, were named among some of the best in the country at the midyear. Inside Lacrosse released its annual Midseason Media All-America lists Friday afternoon.
A senior, Mark was named Midseason Media All-America First Team as the goalie. A versatile senior long stick midfielder/close defenseman \Olexo and freshman attacker Spallina were selected to the Honorable Mention list.
Mark, who hails from Danville, California, is one of the top keepers in Division I, making saves at a 60.6 percent rate, second best in the country. His 140 total saves are the second most in Division I while averaging a seventh-best 14.00 saves an outing. Mark carries a 9.61 goals against average into this weekend's ACC showdown with No. 3 Notre Dame.
Olexo, an Annapolis, Maryland product, is one of the top takeaway defenders in the country, causing a team-best 17 turnovers. His 1.70 per game rate is tied for 22nd best in Division I. Olexo has at least one caused turnover in eight of the 10 games to date, including a pair of games with four takeaways. He ranks second on the team with 34 ground balls, playing on the wing for faceoffs while picking up close defense duties.
Spallina, already in the top 10 in all three scoring categories for a Syracuse freshman, leads the Orange with 46 points. He also paces Syracuse with 27 and is tied for the team lead with 19 assists. The Mount Sinai, New Yorker leads Division I with nine extra-man goals through 10 games in his freshman campaign. He is one of two freshmen in Division I with at least five man-up goals and needs just one more to be the first 'Cuse player to double digits since 2015 when Dylan Donahue scored 15.
The Orange, which received votes in both polls this weekend, return to ACC play on Saturday, taking on third-ranked Notre Dame. The final home game of the regular season is set for a 2 p.m. faceoff on ACC Network with Drew Carter '19 and Matt Ward on the call.
