Men's Rowing Begins Goes Trophy Weekend with Boat Dedication
4/14/2023 5:38:00 PM | Men's Rowing
A new shell has been added to the James E. Ten Eyck Boathouse for the Syracuse men's rowing team. The Joseph S. Caldwell, Jr., was officially dedicated on Friday evening ahead of Saturday's races against No. 12 Cornell and No. 21 Navy in Ithaca, N.Y.Â
"Every boat in my time, and [former head coach] Bill Sanford's time, was given by a donor who though enough of the program and thought enough of the sport and their experience here that they have given back," Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman said at the dedication.Â
Â
'The Caldwell' as the team has dubbed it, was donated by brothers Jim '74 and John Lambert '72 in name of their grandfather Joseph S. Caldwell, Jr., who was the first person in the Caldwell family to attend Syracuse University. Joseph Caldwell Jr. met his wife at Syracuse, the Lamberts' parents met at Syracuse as well. In total, eight members of the family attended Syracuse.Â
"I grew up in Ithaca, I went to Syracuse and I live in Annapolis so you can't get many more Goes Cups than that," said Jim Lambert at the dedication. "I am really excited that you now have a boat that is the real deal."
Lambert went on to discuss how he recently reconnected with the men's rowing program at Syracuse where he and his brother were an oarsmen in the 70s. He was inspired by the annual improvement of the Orange fleet and was moved by last season's fifth place finish at the IRA Championship. The brothers decided to donate a boat to the Orange program and name the boat after their grandfather who graduated in 1925. "Our grandfather bled Orange," Jim said. While at Syracuse he was a manager for the football team in 1924 and was lifelong friends with legendary lacrosse coach Roy Simmons.Â
The second varsity eight (2V8+) will race in the Joseph S. Caldwell, Jr., for the first tome on Saturday morning when the Orange line up with Cornell and Navy at 9:30 a.m. on the Cayuga Inlet on the southern point of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca.Â
