The Goes Trophy stays in Syracuse. The Stagg Trophy does, too.Â
The No. 4 Orange (5:33.8) beat No. 12 Cornell (5:43.3) and No. 21 Navy (5:44.0)Â on Saturday morning to win the third-straight Goes Trophy. It's the first time since 2006-08 the Orange have won the cup in three-consecutive races.Â
"It felt amazing coming out from a long weekend in California and a week of getting back in the swing of things on the east coast time zone," varsity coxswain Bricen Nygaard said. "It was nice to come out in what was provided a beautiful, beautiful day with some amazing racing conditions. We went out there, had a clean race and executed exactly what we wanted to do and in the end came out on top with some open water. It was a beautiful day for racing."Â
The varsity eight won by open water on both Cornell and Navy. Syracuse's V8+ is now 4-1 on the season with its only loss coming to No. 1 California last weekend.
"The race was much better than last week," Nicholas Kohl (stroke seat) said. "We found a better read of Arnaud [Buard] in stroke and we were able to carry more power through the whole 2,000 meters. and the margin showed it."Â
Syracuse showed its depth also winning the second (2V8+) and third varsity eight (3V8+) races to retain the Stagg Trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the top-three boats combined each time Cornell, Navy and 'Cuse race.Â
After a narrow loss to Cal last week (+0.7 seconds) the 2V8+ (5:43.5) bounced back with a dominant win over Navy (5:46.7) and Cornell (5:51.4). The 3V8+ (5:42.4) was the first race of the day for the Orange and set the tone early with a big win over both opponents. Navy (5:46.0) was second and Cornell was third (5:49.3).Â
In the 4V8+ Navy (5:53.4) earned the victory over Syracuse (5:56.5) but the Orange had an edge on Cornell (6:02.7) in its first race of the season. The final race of the day was the V4+ (6:44.4) for Syracuse, who lost to both crews as Cornell finished in 6:38.5 ahead of Navy (6:40.4) and the Orange.Â
