Tennis Ends Weekend With Loss To Wake Forest

In a ranked league clash, No. 28 Syracuse tennis was defeated by No. 27 Wake Forest, 5-2, in Winston-Salem, N.C. This was the fifth straight match in which Syracuse faced an opponent ranked in the ITA's Top 30.

The Demon Deacons jumped out to a hot start when the 26^th best doubles team in the nation, Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth (WF), took down Zeynep Erman/Ines Fonte, 6-1. The home team then claimed the doubles point when Nevena Carton/Whitley Pate (WF) defeated Polina Kozyreva/Miyuka Kimoto, 6-2. Shiori Ito/Viktoriya Kanapatskaya were trailing Mia Ahmad/Casie Wooten (WF), 4-3, but cut their match short.

Wake Forest doubled its advantage early in singles play with a win from No. 42 ranked Wooten against Erman (6-0, 6-0). Ito put the first points on the board for the Orange, breaking her five-match losing streak by handling Pate (WF) 6-1, 6-0. Fonte continued the momentum with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Maddie Lynch (WF), but Kozyreva was unable to defeat Carton (WF), losing 7-5, 6-4. With two points left to play for, Kanapatskaya and Kimoto were each in the third set of their respective matches, and the Orange needed both victories to take the duel.

However, No. 52 ranked Anna Brylin (WF) held off Kimoto (6-1, 2-6, 6-2) to clinch the win for Wake Forest. Kanapatskaya and Killingsworth played out the remaining match, with the junior Demon Deacon prevailing, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.

The Orange will look to get back to their winning ways as they round out the regular season on the road against Notre Dame (April 14) and Louisville (April 16) next weekend.
