Doepking Earns 100th Syracuse Win, Orange Sweep Virginia
4/29/2023 6:57:00 PM | Softball
The Orange were led by sophomore infielder Kelly Breen at the plate. Breen logged her first multi-home run performance, hitting two solo homers while driving in five runs. Catcher Laila Alves tied her career-high in RBIs with four, hitting the first grand slam of 2023.Â
Left-handed pitcher Lindsey Hendrix got the start, pitching 1.1 innings, striking out one batter while allowing three runs on two hits. Freshman Madison Knight earned the winning decision, tossing 5.2 relief innings, striking out five hitters while giving up three runs on three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Syracuse's (23-22-1, 7-12-1 ACC) red-hot offense started strong, recording the first four runs of the game in the first inning. Infielder Tessa Galipeau and outfielder Madelyn Lopez put traffic on the base paths, starting the inning with back-to-back walks. After two outs, Knight reached on the third walk of the frame, loading the bases for Alves. The sophomore battled to a full-count, pushing a ball past the right field wall for the first grand slam of the season, 4-0.Â
The following inning saw Virginia (29-21, 8-17) battle back, reducing Syracuse's lead to one. A leadoff walk and a double from infielder Gabby Baylog put two runners in scoring position for designated player Reece Holbrook, who hit a three-run homer, 4-3.Â
The Orange kept manufacturing runs, bringing in three runs in the second inning. With the top of the order up and one out, the Orange rattled off three consecutive hits, as Galipeau, Lopez and outfielder Angel Jasso all recorded singles. 'Cuse converted another bases-loaded opportunity, as Breen cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double, 7-3.Â
The third inning saw 'Cuse utilize small ball tactics to produce two more runs. With two runners on base, infielder Ryan Starr slapped an infield single, scoring a run as Virginia committed a throwing error, 8-3. Galipeau brought in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, 9-3.Â
In the fourth frame, the Cavaliers pulled a run back, scoring on a fielding error with the bases loaded, 9-4.Â
Breen showcased her power in the fourth inning, blasting Syracuse's fifth home run of the series to straight-away center field, 10-4. Breen leads the Orange in home runs this season with seven.
The back-and-forth scoring showed no signs of slowing down in the fifth inning. After infielder Shelby Barbee was hit by a pitch, Baylog hit a two-run homer, 10-6.Â
Breen's big day continued at the plate in the sixth inning. The Placentia, California native smashed a ball past the left field fence for her second home run of the day and her fifth RBI of the game, 11-6. Breen is the first Orange batter to drive in five runs in a single game since Faith Cain in 2017. A sacrifice fly from Clyde brought in the final run of the game, 12-6.
Syracuse finished the game with 12 runs, tying a season high and setting a new high in ACC play this season.
CELEBRATING 29 ON THE 29th:Â
