The momentum continues for the renovation of the home of the Orange—the John A. Lally Athletics Complex. Following approval from the Syracuse University Board of Trustees, construction will commence on a new Football Operations Center and the "One Team" Olympic Sports Center, the latter of which will become home to all Syracuse student-athletes.
"Syracuse University is committed to excellence in every aspect of the student experience," says Chancellor Kent Syverud. "For our student-athletes, that means providing them with the kind of environment that supports excellence on and off the fields of play. That's the aspirational vision for the Lally Athletics Complex and it's exciting to see it move forward with the support it deserves."
The Lally Athletics Complex is the state-of-the-art academic and athletic village that is receiving enthusiastic support from philanthropic donors and Orange fans inspired by the vision of creating an unbeatable student-athlete experience. The complex serves more than 600 student-athletes across 20 teams.
"This is a critical step toward the creation of an academic and athletic village for every Syracuse student-athlete," says Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "The Lally Athletics Complex is all about providing a best in class experience. We are grateful for the support from the Board of Trustees, our donors and supporters."

New Football Operations Center
The Football Operations Center will provide significant upgrades to the student-athlete experience and help them meet their performance goals. The facility will feature increased sports medicine space and student-athlete recovery rooms, a new and expanded team cafeteria and nutrition space, as well as a new locker room, position meeting rooms and coaches' offices, among other amenities.
The facility will also feature upgraded branding that pays homage to the program's outstanding history. A significant gift from Howard "Howie" Phanstiel '70, G'71 and his wife Louise, was made to pay tribute to Syracuse University football legend No. 44 Floyd Little '67, H'16. As a result of their $5 million pledge, the Little Atrium entryway will keep Little's extraordinary legacy and legend of #44 alive. The new Football Operations Center will also feature exhibits honoring the history and tradition of Syracuse University football. The expanded footprint of the building also has dedicated space to utilize for recruiting visits.
"One Team" Olympic Sports Center
The "One Team" Olympic Sports Center will feature an expanded sports medicine center, student-athlete lounge and recovery space, and a cafeteria and dining center. The 'One Team' name stems from creating an operations center which holistically supports all Olympic sports teams while facilitating an environment for student-athletes to build relationships with their peers across all sports. A $2 million pledge from one of the most avid Orange athletics fan, Joyce Hergenhan '63, will name the "One Team" Olympic Sports Team Lounge.
Building on Momentum
Phase 1 began with the new Lally Athletics Complex entranceway, which was dedicated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this year. It features a welcome lobby for visitors, families, alumni and recruits and new meeting areas and office spaces. Launched in November 2021 with the announcement of a $150 million fundraising campaign—part of the University's Forever Orange Campaign—the Lally Athletics Complex focuses solely on elevating the student-athlete experience and ensuring that Syracuse Athletics is distinctive and competitive among its ACC peers.
Naming and recognition opportunities remain available for the Football Operations Center, "One Team" Olympic Sports Center, Olympic Sports Medicine Wing, Olympic Sports Dining Hall, and many other prominent spaces.
Three-time football letterwinner John Lally '82 and his wife, Laura, provided the lead gift with a pledge of $25 million to jumpstart work on the transformation of the 60-year old Manley Field House, the hub of activity for student-athletes, into the Lally Athletics Complex. Their commitment is spread out over multiple phases, as benchmarks are met in the fundraising process and other donors are inspired to make their own mark on the new complex.
The Phase 1 goal of $55 million was met with a portion of the Lally's commitment earmarked for the first phase, as well as more than $40 million raised through major gift commitments from additional donors. To date, nearly 200 donors have provided support to Syracuse Athletics through major gift pledges, through their engagement with the Legends Society, the leadership fundraising arm of the 'Cuse Athletics Fund ('CAF). The Legends Society encompasses alumni, friends and fans from 21 states and more than a third of donors who supported phase 1 are former student-athletes. Most recently, Syracuse University announced a $3 million gift from trustee Edward "Ed" Pettinella G'76 in support of phase 1 of the Lally Complex and the JMA Wireless Dome Transformation Project.
"We are so grateful to all of our Syracuse alumni, family and friends who have given thoughtfully and generously to help complete phase 1," says 'Cuse Athletics Fund Executive Director Michael Paulus. "We are celebrating this milestone due to your philanthropic support and thank you for your leadership. There is tremendous excitement about this project for our student-athletes and coaches, and we look forward to building upon the momentum as we enter into the next phase of the campaign."
Looking to the Future
As construction of the Football Operations Center and the "One Team" Olympic Sports Center, fundraising will continue in earnest to support the anticipated next phase of the project. Phase 2 will include the Student-Athlete Development Center encompassing academic program support, tutoring space, mental health support and career counseling. The University also plans to construct a new Strength & Conditioning Performance Center and an updated Hall of Champions to recognize alumni successes and celebrate the accomplishments of Orange student-athletes in the classroom and on the field. This area will also serve as a gathering and event space.
